Cupcakes, a Sign of the Times

This entry has a rating of 4.5

I love cupcakes. Brownies are my favorite, but cupcakes are a close second. For a long time, to get a cupcake in Wilmington you had to head to one of the chain grocery stores or know someone with a killer recipe, and even then you were limited to the ordinary flavors: chocolate, vanilla, and the occasional variation on the theme.

A Taste of Italy is Splendido

This entry has a rating of 4.5

Every time I visit A Taste of Italy I’m happy I did. Whether I go for an eggplant parmesan on a roll or a meatball wedge, pick up some fresh mozzarella or a little antipasto, the food is always fresh and delicious, and the service is top-notch.
The place does booming business and yet all [...]

Country Fresh Produce

This entry has a rating of 4.5

Three words that should drive fear into the hearts of produce departments in major chain grocery stores: Country Fresh Produce. Located at 2069 Carolina Beach Rd, my wife and I have become regulars at “Country Fresh” for two reasons: 1) it’s affordable and 2) most of the produce sold there is from our region.

Bar Scenes: The Fat Pelican

It’s no big secret that Wilmington and the surrounding areas host their fair share of bars. In downtown, for example, you can’t walk ten feet without passing one… literally. But some bars are more eclectic than others, and to them I raise my glass.

Giorgio’s: Poor food, poorer service = See ya

This entry has a rating of 1

When we first moved to Wilmington over four years ago, we enjoyed Giorgio’s for its cheap traditional Italian dishes and its huge portions. A plate of spaghetti, for example, cost about $9 and typically made two or three meals. We have since moved on to other favorite eateries (Flaming Amy’s, A Taste of Italy, Nikki’s, to [...]

Downtown restaurant Catch opening for dinner

After two years I finally tried Catch, the award-winning casual restaurant featuring sparse hours (Mon-Fri, 11am-2pm) and a seafood menu. While its chef, the well-regarded Keith Rhodes of Deluxe fame, likes to mix traditional southern dishes with a curious medley of Asian influences, it somehow works.

Note to self: This stuff is good at 8.50 a bottle at Tidal Creek.
Rich, drinkable, euro.

Siena Restaurant

This entry has a rating of 1.5

Siena’s Pizzeria is not good. It has taken the place of a beautiful open field there at the rounded, historic corner of Masonboro Loop and Masonboro Sound roads, just a few months ago now, along with some other retail and office ventures — a dry cleaner, a mortgage broker (?).

The pizza is thin and — [...]

The Bowl, another Flaming Amy’s original

This entry has a rating of 4

THIS IS RE-PRINT FROM AN EARLIER COMMENT. THE EDITOR SUGGESTED I POST IT AS A REVIEW — R
Like its predecessor, Flaming Amy’s Bowl is a true original (See I Spy: Flaming Amy’s Bowl on the Grove Project). In fact, it’s any restaurant you want it to be. While it carries a vague Mongolian Grill theme that [...]
