New Restaurant Alert

While India Mahal is okay, Wilmington’s always had a dearth of really good Indian food. So I’m glad to see a new restaurant moving into the space that was Big D’s burger biker bar on South College across from Hugh MacRae Park. It’s called Tandoori Bites: Fine Indian Cuisine, and I hope it lives up [...]

Local business leader and entrepreneur Tom Looney on this region’s worrying association with Detroit:
Detroit and the Carolinas: Economically Hard Hit Areas.

During White House talks this week on the deep economic problems being faced by millions of Americans, the Carolinas and Detroit were singled out as being particularly “hard hit areas.” To be lumped with Detroit [...]

New Hanover County in the dumps

A special public affairs program about an issue we’ve raised here before (to little avail) is being held Thursday night at 6:30 PM on WHQR:

New Hanover County Commissioners are looking at possibly turning the county landfill and waste-to-energy facility over to private industry. So far, there has been no place for public input, and little [...]

Junk Mail Junkie Finds A Gem

We all get junk mail, but I actually enjoy going through mine from time to time. This one came in one of those coupon booklets and really caught my eye.
It’s an interesting concept — tobacco-free smoking that is legal in bars and restaurants, even after the ban begins Jan. 2. My biggest question about [...]

Issue Fatigue? Too wasted for waste development?

Last week, as WHQR reports (Should NHCo Privatize the Landfill?), New Hanover County residents were surveyed for their feelings about the proposed privatization of the county’s trash management services, in part because of financial strains on the county budget.
The feedback from those polled — and about this important story in general — has been [...]

Is US Air Leaving Wilmington High and Dry?

The Charlotte Observer is reporting that US Airways is shedding 1,000 jobs and will focus nearly all of its flying on its three hubs (Philly, Phoenix and Charlotte) and Washington, DC.
Anyone know what this means for Wilmington?

Starting October 1, plastic bottles will be banned from the landfill.
The goal of the state-wide ban is to double the annual amount of plastic bottles recycled to 2 million tons by 2012.
The new law also [...]

Battle raging at Wilmington Craig’s List employment ads

With more folks than usual looking for work these days, many ignore the lame want ads in The Star-News and instead go right to places like Craig’s List. Unfortunately, so many ads on CL pay pauper’s wages, lead nowhere, or are downright scams.
I do know one person who was hired by a local company [...]
