Battle raging at Wilmington Craig’s List employment ads
With more folks than usual looking for work these days, many ignore the lame want ads in The Star-News and instead go right to places like Craig’s List. Unfortunately, so many ads on CL pay pauper’s wages, lead nowhere, or are downright scams.
I do know one person who was hired by a local company from an ad on CL, but he quit after three months when the company wanted him perform some illegal bookkeeping duties.
My favorite thing lately about the local listings on CL are the battles between would-be employers and would-be employees. A typical listing might include what seem like duties more suited for a Fortune 500 company (with advanced degrees and appropriate experience required), but the compensation is grossly inadequate.
People are fed up with these and strike back with nasty comments directed at the employers for taking the general public for granted.
Here’s one recent post:
Looking for part time personnal assistant for in home office in Brunswick County. Approximately 16 hours per week, flexible daytime hours needed. May grow to more hours. Must be competent at Microsoft Publisher, other Microsoft applications, and internet use. Good communication and telephone skills are essential. Must have own transportation, and be willing to run errands, do event set up, housekeeping, laundry, and childcare. Background check, drug testing, and references needed. Please send resume and 3 references. Do not apply if unable to perform above tasks.
Compensation: $8.00 per hour
And the snarky response:
I doubt I could come up with 3 references that know how well I can clean house, do laundry and run errands nor does my resume reflect these skills either. As far as drug testing – I would definitely test positive for what I’d have to take to accept a position that requires me to do all that is requested in 16 hrs. at only $8/hr.
This looks like the ads that are tacked on the boards at the grocery store – a lot for nothing.
As an office/administrative professional I’m insulted by this ad.
Compensation: Worthless
It’s all pretty entertaining — as long as you’re not looking for work.

I have sold a table and hired a contractor on Craig’s list in the last week.
I put specific instructions on the job listing.
1. Must be able to come to Wilmington once per week for meeting.
2. Response must have certain info in it.
Only 2 our of 40+ responses followed the instructions. I did not respond to any of them, except the one that we choose. Otherwise, the people did not even read my post, so why should I waste my time with a response.
Not saying you did that, but you get so many responses, that it often is impossible to respond to them. Also, stuff from CL almost always goes to my spam folder.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but the musician’s area on ILM CL is completely depressing:

What could be a really useful place for talking about area music, gigs for would-be band members, jamming, events, equipment, and so on, devolves — like lots of little ingroups do — into this trolling, shouting, cannabalism, and music-scene-self-hatred.
New musicians or musicians newly arrived to Wilmington ask innocent, useful questions about where to play and with whom and just get shit on, then shit back, and then disappear.
I think it’s mostly a flame war between 13 year old death metal heads and 55 year old “blues” legends. It’s funny, but you laugh to keep from crying.
