Upcoming shows at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater
We get a lot of search requests for the Greenfield Amphitheater schedule, which doesn’t look like it has any good home. I’m as anxious as anyone to know what’s coming up at this great arts locale. (See At Home with Shakespeare, Greenfield: A good place for a concert after they get the kinks worked out, Google map).
So I’m starting a feed of events registered for Greenfield Amphitheater with imeem.com:

I saw Todd Snider years ago when he warmed up for– the man– John Prine. I hate to sound like a groupie, but I freakin’ LOVE Todd Snider! He is truly great, and we are lucky lucky! Thanks for the good news, see you there! Don’t miss this one.

What’s not listed in the feed from imeem, but what we can see from recent search traffic to this site, is that Gary Jules is going to appear at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater on August 9th of this year, and that he will be opening for Donavon Frankenreiter (!) That ought to be great.

The local music stores sell them too. But I don’t see any single online box office.

We went to the concert last night and it was wonderful. The big surprise for me was Elizabeth Cook, http://www.elizabeth-cook.com , the opening act. She was amazingly talented and entertaining, with a sound strongly reminiscent of Dolly Parton and Hank Williams (she once sang back-up for Nancy Griffith) but she rocked like Sheryl Crow. She’d fit in perfectly at Merlefest. Her songs were hilarious, I’d never heard, “Sometimes It Takes Balls to Be a Woman”. I think I fell in love with her when she slipped off her cowboy boots and put on tap shoes. She clogged West Virginia style to the crowd’s cheers.
Todd Snider delivered nicely, with his charm and earnest style. I was glad to hear some new songs, and “Alright Guy”. He skipped “Doublewide Blues” and “Beer Run”. The crowd would have appreciated a few more songs at the end. But all in all, he was great.
My only complaint about the venue… the crowd— and way too much weed in the air. The drunks up front were dancing when there was no music. You forget that some people are still following the Dead in their minds. The 3 people sitting in front of us video-taped the whole show, but they never even watched it. They just talked, laughed, passed drugs back and forth, and made out. At first, I nearly lost it, but my husband kindly traded seats with me, he’s 8 inches taller, and we managed to ignore the bs in front of us. Still, it was a bummer that we brought our 13 year old into the major drug scene, and I didn’t see that one coming.
Reminds me of a Todd Snider song, “Combover Blues”… “Never thought I’d hear myself say, God, what’s the matter with these kids today?”

Kids today, kids yesterday. It doesn’t sound to me like too much has changed. Weed in the air at an open air venue isn’t very shocking, but not paying attention to the music is pretty unappealing. And the drunks up front dancing? I have no problem with that. At least they’re not fighting.

Spoken like a drunk up front dancing, Ranald (?)

Good point, Ranald, I should have known what to expect… I guess I don’t get out much. I did see Keb Mo at UNCW & Ben Taylor at the SoapBox, but those were inside, yuppified, sit down and relax events. But don’t get me wrong, the drunks dancing were great— I’ve been there, done that, and they all looked happy… the dancing just seemed strangely out of sync with what was happening on stage. To me. But I am getting old. Forgot to mention, the evening was gorgeous and the beer was cold… Green Coast Recyclers were grabbing the beer bottles. I’d go back to GLA, with eyes opened.

Green Coast Recyclers, who volunteered to keep it clean there, are absolute menschen and hard-working great citizens.
We’re still working on our neighbors to get a recycling stop together in our (outside the city limits) neighborhood in Masonboro.

Great, Bill. We’re sending Clif at Green Coast recycling a list of names, emails, and addresses from Friendly Lane to start things up — Email me your stuff at info@groveproject.org and I’ll pass it on.
