WHQR-FM completes restructuring; no changes to programming planned

WILMINGTON, NC — The Board of Directors of the Friends of Public Radio has completed a restructuring of WHQR-FM, Wilmington’s non-profit, community supported, public radio station. The restructuring resulted in personnel layoffs and the elimination of the General Manager, Director of Development and Director of Programming positions. This restructuring, with the addition of cuts in expenses, puts WHQR on solid financial footing without sacrificing programming and services.

“The downturn in the national and local economy contributed to a shortfall in projected revenues that resulted in a budget deficit that required immediate action,” said Jeff Hunter, Board Vice-Chair. “Our promise to our listeners is that no matter how difficult the economic times become, we will do everything to keep our signal beaming to your radio at FM 91.3. We are committed to providing your favorite programs and bringing you those familiar, local voices we’ve all come to know and love so well.”

WHQR will mark its 25th Anniversary in 2009, which kicks off with a Pledge Drive in March. The board is hopeful that the listeners who have enjoyed and grown with WHQR over the past 25 years will show their support financially.

Established in 1984, WHQR Public Radio is an important public resource in the Cape Fear region, serving citizens in times of emergency and as a reliable source of information, news and entertainment.
