Jeff Spicoli quotes aside, two local headlines in the last week caught my attention:
2 UNCW students snared in drug raid, heroin seized
Two UNCW students among four charged with trafficking cocaine
This got me wondering about the drug culture on college campuses, and how it’s changed over the years. I mean, even 20 years ago weed, coke, [...]

We went to stay at the Inn at Celebrity Dairy last weekend. It happened to be one of the three “Farm Days” weekends they have each year, so when we arrived there were dozens of families playing in the hay barn, eating goat cheese, coursing through the paddocks, petting pigs, chasing chickens.

Their owners misuse and embezzle money, then abscond; employees report terrible work conditions and management pressures; management reports similar pressure from upper management (and so on); they’ve apparently either licensed their name or franchised themselves to create some 350 new PCJs in Asia (?!); local competitors, such as the now-closed Folks Cafe, describe arrogant, Walmart-like [...]

I signed up for the The 5th Annual Steve Haydu St. Patrick’s Day Lotide Run 2009, which I’m told is one of the best organized races in the area — fun, competitive, and for a good cause. The course winds through Carolina Beach, around the lake, and ends with a short jog on the beach. There are currently [...]

It is hard to overestimate the charm of this pretty pine-forested preserve which, by-the-way, happens to be right in the middle of the city. The North Carolina Natural Heritage Program (NCNHP), along with Andy Wood, the Education Director of Audubon North Carolina, were able to convince Wilmington city-officials that the land purchased in 1991 was worth more to our community as a nature preserve than as the proposed athletic field complex. Halyburton Park was officially opened to the public in October 2004.

From the Star News this morning: Key study deflates hopes on vitamins:
Chicago | The largest study ever of multivitamin use in older women found the pills did nothing to prevent common cancers or heart disease.
The eight-year study in 161,808 postmenopausal women echoes recent disappointing vitamin studies in men.
Millions of Americans spend billions of dollars on [...]
