Boiling Springs Nature Walk with the Nature Conservancy

“Brunswick County is home to the greatest number of rare plant species in the state.” Join the Nature Conservancy for a guided tour of the Boiling Springs Nature Preserve.
We will be (re)introduced to unique ecological features such as “a series of parallel ridges and swales that are the remnants of an ancient dune system. A large concentration of Carolina bays (elliptical wetland depressions) that stud the landscape. Fire-dependent natural communities, including high and low pocosins (evergreen shrub bogs) and longleaf pine savannas and flatwoods on the ridges and bay rims, form an intricate mosaic of habitats.”
Meet at the Boiling Springs Preserve at 10am on Saturday, December 6. The nature walk will last until 12pm. Please bring water, a snack and maybe bug repellent because there will certainly be some ticks.
The Nature Conservancy guide(s) will be able to answer questions about the preserve and also questions regarding the conservancy itself.

Directions to the trail head:
You will take HWY 17 from Wilmington toward Myrtle Beach. Then you want
to take HWY 87 south toward Boiling Spring Lakes. There is a sign on 17
and there is a Stuckey’s gas station at the intersection of 17 and 87.
Follow 87 south until you get to Boiling Spring Lakes (essentially a
wide spot in the road). You will turn right on West South Shore Drive
(there is a small sign that says Community Center) then take the next
left on Leeds Rd. Leeds Rd is the Community Center road, you can park
wherever you like, the trail head is at the end of the parking lot.
If you have questions or get lost tomorrow call Sara on her cell
