Coalition calls for “Stop Titan” demonstration

Organizers of the grassroots “Stop Titan Cement” effort are calling for a public demonstration on Monday, October 27. That’s the same day Titan America will hold an open workshop at the Northeast Branch of the New Hanover County Public Library. A coalition of six environmental and community groups is asking the public to join in protest outside the library from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, calling for homemade signs and peaceful demonstration. “Bring your children, your grandparents, your neighbors,” reads the flyer. Organizers hope the protest will get the attention of local politicians and candidates.
In an open letter, Friends of the Lower Cape Fear called on the community to show all the candidates running for office that:
- We do not want to be the home of the 4th largest cement plant in the nation!
- We do not want New Hanover County to have the 4th highest mercury emissions in the state!
- We do not want to have the 5th highest mercury source in the Tar Heel State.
- We will not let them destroy 600 acres of “unmitigable” wetlands that provide important habitat and flood protection to our region!
- We will not expose 5,000 children who will attend school within 5 miles of the proposed site to Titan’s dangerous pollution!
- We will not let them pump smog- and ozone-causing pollution into our sweet sea air!
- We won’t let Titan’s mine threaten our drinking water aquifers with benzene or other cancer causing agents!”
The protest is a joint effort of Friends of the Lower Cape Fear, Cape Fear River Watch, the North Carolina Coastal Federation, PenderWatch & Conservancy, Cape Fear CAN, and the local Sierra Club chapter. These groups are working in concert to fight Titan’s proposed Castle Hayne cement plant and mine.
