Local environmentalism: Carrotmob makes it rain

(Just not our local yet.) Kind of a neat idea by a group in San Francisco, with a video that shows how successful it was and how easily it might be scaled up — or used in areas like ours:

Carrotmob Makes It Rain from carrotmob on Vimeo.

The group shown here, carrotmob, whose name from the idea of using a carrot rather than a stick to drive change, organizes a bunch of consumers and starts a kind of bidding war among liquor stores in a neighborhood: Which of them will contribute the largest percentage of their sales to reinvestment in energy efficiency. The winner in this video, a little mom and pop in the Mission, ends up with lines around the block, many people buying things there to give to soup kitchens, thousands extra in sales, free consultation, a funny rock video, and a much more energy efficient business on the other side. Win win win.
