New neighbors: Ospreys

osprey1.jpg

Two ospreys have built a nest in a tall tree near our house. They’re beautiful to hear and to see wheeling around the sky, calling to one another, tending things.

Can’t see young ones yet, but then the nest is pretty big, and when we were in Nags Head we saw several little ones pop up from a nest that had also looked empty. We saw what looked like a third osprey around today — maybe an adolescent? Maybe a visitor?

Thanks, Tanya! R & I took it, but it’s the setup that’s stunning: These birds are so close by, you can see them tending to things, flying around, returning from the water with fish. R said she saw some little ones the other day.

I agree – it’s a beautiful pic. Is this a tree by your house? Groove!

All three Ospreys have left the nest. Mom and dad headed south several weeks ago, and the baby, after having spent some time on his/her own has left as well. I can’t help missing them when I look up and see that giant empty nest. Our neighbor’s friend has published a book on the migration of the Osprey, and according to him, our family of birds will return in the spring.
