Dixie Grill: It’s good
We went downtown this morning to try the Basics breakfast and maybe take part in the conversation, but were thwarted by the 10:30AM opening, and so went instead to the incomparable—the institutional—Dixie Grill on Market St. right near Front.

Though my family has been southern nearly as long as the country’s existed, I don’t know much about southern food and its nuances (Or are the virtues of southern cuisine rather its honest lack of nuance? See I don’t know…I’m not a foodie.)
The coffee is middling, I don’t like the hash browns much, but the grits are great, as are the apple sausages and other breakfast components. The place is more open, less stuffy, but no less funky or comfortable with a recent redesign that had them closed for a few months last year. The owner and staff seem great. The Dixie now has nighttime hours and beer taps, and a longer drinking and eatin’ counter where every kind of person saddles up.

Lewis Grizzard once said, “Giving Northerners unbuttered instant grits is an old remedy for getting rid of tourists.”
I think this is true, and I also think that the Dixie Grill has the best grits in North Carolina. At least, they’re the only place in Wilmington where I’ve eaten any real grits at all.
Plus they seem to have spontaneous live music. 10am on Tuesday morning? No problem. There’s a guy playing his guitar, and he’s actually good.
