Carolina Beach State Park

It’s a great time of year to visit the CBSP (wikipedia)–the fallen leaves are all fermenting in the fall rains, mushrooms and lichen proliferate, die-hards people the semi-flooded campgrounds, the fisherman are busying their boats in and out of the marina.

We go in the summer–it’s nice to be able to hike so near the water, to have a beautiful little park virtually to yourself…A friend of ours who grew up in the region remembers, going to the park as a teenager with his friends to drink beer and listen to Pink Floyd, coming upon a dead body on the white sand trails–a man who had apparently expired while trail-running earlier that day…

But now…it’s perfect weather for hiking (and there’s a 4-mile Turkey Trot coming up on the trail on the Saturday after Thanksgiving). Big sailboats are returning north along the Cape Fear, the trails are spongey, the birds and the deer are reclaiming.
